Why do we need this section?!

Unfortunately, exchanging money into the Argentine Peso (ARS) is far from simple. But with a bit of careful planning you can use it to your advantage and make your trip a lot cheaper.

We’ve created this section to help guide you through some of the complexities associated with using ARS, but please do your own research too. We are no experts, and the economic situation is rapidly changing, particularly with the recent Presential election.

Exchange Rates

There are a number of different exchange rates that exist, from Coldplay to Soy, Official and Blue. But there are (only?) three exchange rates you need to worry about as a tourist:

Official

The worst exchange rate. This is the rate fixed by the government and what you will pay if you change money at official banks, or an online booking platform is converting ARS to your local currency. Avoid at all costs!

Blue

This is the rate if you exchange USD for ARS with an arbolito (little tree) - a person that will exchange money.

Details on a trusted arbolito will be shared ahead of your arrival . Simply bring your USD and exchange with confidence - it's legal and commonplace.

MEP

The rate you’ll get using a foreign card. The rate is somewhere between the Blue and Official. However, it does mean you don’t need to carry cash around and is useful for online purchases made in ARS. Check Visa/Mastercard/Amex for their rates.

Our Top Tips

1

Pay in cash when you can. Various shops and restaurants will also give you a discount for using cash.

2

Avoid paying in advance (so you can pay in cash). Whilst it may not be possible for pre booked items, it's always worth asking.

3

If you have to pay anything online, try to pay in ARS so you can access the MEP on your card.
